In addition to our Orlando lawn care service, you should take great care in watering your lawn by following these tips from our lawn care expert, Steve Okros:
Severe draught, my lawn, and me:
Between watering restrictions at 2 days a week and some of the worst drought conditions we have seen in years, keeping your Florida lawn healthy and green, while being a thoughtful and ecological citizen is easier than you think.
First, perform a thorough examination of your sprinkler system. On your scheduled watering day, go through each zone and check for coverage. All too often you will find “hot spots”, or areas your system is either reaching only marginally, or not at all. Most sprinkler heads can be adjusted with a simple flat head screw driver. You may need to make the head shoot farther or drop more water. In some cases you may need to add another head. In the mean time, you can hand water those areas.
Next, let’s examine how much water you need. For best results you should deliver 1 inch of water during each watering cycle. How long your system should run to deliver 1 inch depends on many variables. The best way to determine this is to place any type of cylindrical cans, (empty tuna fish cans work well) around the property while the system cycles through for 20 minutes. If you have 1/4 inch of water in 20 minutes, you need to set the zone for 60 minutes. You want to set zone duration to whatever length of time it takes for those cans to accumulate 1 inch of water.
Finally, the time of day you water should be before the sunrise but after the dew forms on the grass. This is usually between midnight and 6:00 AM. This will allow the water to penetrate deeper into the soil and avoid evaporation, while also keeping the amount of water on the grass blade to one time a day. This reduces the possibility of fungus.
Now, with proper coverage, correct duration, and the proper watering time, you are well on your way to beautiful lawn care!
